A syringe is a common medical instrument. As early as the 15th century, the Italian Catinelle proposed the principle of the syringe. It is primarily used with a needle to draw in or inject gas or liquid. Syringes can also be used with medical equipment, containers, and in some scientific instruments, such as in certain chromatography methods, to inject through a rubber membrane.
