Wind is a renewable energy source with great potential. In the early 18th century, a violent windstorm that swept across England and France destroyed 400 windmills, 800 houses, 100 churches, over 400 sailing ships, and injured thousands of people. The storm also uprooted 250,000 trees. In terms of uprooting trees alone, the wind produced 10 million horsepower (equivalent to 7.5 million kilowatts; one horsepower equals 0.75 kilowatts) in just a few seconds! It has been estimated that the wind energy resources available for electricity generation on Earth amount to about 1 billion kilowatts, nearly 10 times the current global hydroelectric power generation. At present, the energy obtained from coal burning worldwide each year is only one-third of the energy provided by wind power in the same period. Therefore, both domestically and internationally, there is significant emphasis on utilizing wind power for electricity generation and developing new energy sources.
